Percentage change calculator

Illustration for the percentage change calculator

Calculate the percentage increase or decrease from an original value to a new value.

Formula and example

Percentage change = (new value − original value) ÷ original value × 100. A negative answer is a decrease.

Worked example

A change from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase: (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100.

Assumptions and limits

The original value must be above zero. Results are relative to that original value; percentage changes are not symmetric when values are reversed.
