Estimate basal metabolic rate with the Mifflin–St Jeor equation using age, height, weight and the equation’s male/female constants.

Formula and example

Mifflin–St Jeor: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age; subtract 161 for the female equation constant or add 5 for the male equation constant.

Worked example

The Mifflin–St Jeor equation estimates resting energy use. It is an estimate and does not account for individual medical conditions or body composition.

Assumptions and limits

This prediction equation estimates resting energy expenditure for adults; it is not a measured calorie requirement. The equation uses a binary constant and may not fit every person.
