BMI calculator

Illustration for the bmi calculator

Estimate body mass index (BMI) using metric height and weight.

Formula and example

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)².

Worked example

For 70 kg and 175 cm, BMI is 70 ÷ 1.75² = 22.9. BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis.

Assumptions and limits

For adults, BMI is a screening measure rather than a diagnosis. It does not account for body composition, age-related differences or pregnancy.
